Diesel shortage claims the lives of over 5,000 chickens: Farmers in Malkangiri are the most vulnerable
Malkangiri (18/05) Pratik Samachar- The severe shortage of petrol and diesel in the state has now disrupted the livelihood of the people and has dealt a fatal blow to the poultry farming business. Due to the fuel crisis, more than 5,000 chickens have died of suffocation in Malkangiri town as the temperature in the farm could not be controlled in time. The farmers concerned have been completely devastated due to this unfortunate incident. According to the information received, Manoj Kumar Padhi, a farmer from Mundaguda area of Ward No. 01, Malkangiri, has a large chicken farm. Generally, chicken farms require a specific temperature and continuous ventilation to keep the chickens and large chickens safe. For this, large generators are used during frequent power cuts, which are completely dependent on diesel. But for the past few days, due to the severe shortage of diesel in the market, it was not possible to run the generator. As a result, the temperature inside the farm increased and the ventilation stopped. One by one, 5,000 such chickens died due to extreme heat and suffocation. Manoj Kumar Padhi, who was desperate to get some diesel, ran to the petrol pump but could not get any, resulting in the chickens dying in front of his eyes. I don't know how I will recover this huge financial loss, said Manoj Kumar Padhi, the farm owner. The fuel crisis is not limited to the farm itself, but due to the closure of vehicles, the transport of chicken feed and other essential items has also come to a complete halt. If the supply of petrol and diesel does not return to normal in the coming days, then thousands of farmers involved in this business will face a major financial crisis and there is a risk of soaring prices of chicken meat and eggs in the market. There are demands in the local area for the government and district administration to take this emergency situation seriously and ensure immediate fuel supply and provide financial assistance to the affected farmers.
